Fall/Winter 2009

The school year opened with the familiar buzz of energy as students poured into the halls, each class stepping into its own new chapter of challenges, excitement, and tradition. Homecoming set the tone early, with Student Council transforming the school for “A Night in Manhattan” and the community gathering to crown Ellen Potts as the 2009 Homecoming Queen. The Wildcats delivered a thrilling season across sports—football surged to a 10–2 record with standout performances from Lee Longo, Tim Wetzel, and Carey Spear, who “broke his own school record and tied the state of Ohio record by making a 61 yard field goal”. Soccer pushed deep into the playoffs as well, falling just short in a hard‑fought regional semifinal. Alongside these student achievements, the community honored the legacy of Joe DeLauro by expanding his memorial scholarship, ensuring his spirit continues to support future Mayfield graduates.

Beyond campus life, alumni stories painted a vivid picture of the enduring Mayfield bond. Former students gathered for reunions across the country—from the warm sunshine of the annual Fort Myers Mini Reunion to a joyful 70th‑birthday pajama‑party celebration in Flagstaff, where classmates “enjoyed five days of joy-filled laughter, on-going reminiscing”. The newsletter also highlighted new Hall of Fame inductees whose careers in law, medicine, public service, and academia reflect the values they first cultivated at Mayfield. Efforts to name the school gym after beloved coach and teacher John Steadman showed how deeply educators continue to shape the community. Through scholarships, reunions, memorials, and shared accomplishments, the stories in this issue celebrate the lasting pride and connection that define the Mayfield family.
