Spring/Summer 2012

The past semester at Mayfield was filled with moments that reminded us just how strong and connected our Wildcat community is. We came together to honor the memory of beloved science teacher Kim Yirga, whose legacy inspired a benefit concert featuring student band Evolution and teacher band The Marzanos—an event that “turned out better than I could have ever expected,” as Ed Beck shared.  The concert helped fund a new scholarship awarded to five resilient seniors. Students also celebrated a standout baseball season, a magical Prom themed Somewhere Only We Know, and a Commencement that sent more than 350 graduates—Mr. Loewer’s “favorite” class—off to 80 different colleges with over $7.5 million in scholarships earned.  With major renovations underway, students ended the year eager to return to a transformed campus.

Beyond the school halls, the Alumni Association continued its tradition of supporting excellence, awarding $21,000 in scholarships to 24 deserving seniors whose achievements spanned academics, athletics, arts, leadership, and service.  Reunion plans brought together classes from 1952 to 2002, each preparing celebrations filled with memories, laughter, and renewed friendships. The community also rallied around the ambitious Wildcat Park project, a public‑private effort enhancing safety, infrastructure, and student experiences with new turf, track, bleachers, and gathering spaces.  Even as the Association faced fundraising challenges—such as the decline of the Nautica Charity Poker Festival after the opening of the Horseshoe Casino—it remained committed to finding new ways to support students and preserve the spirit of Mayfield for generations to come.
